Renewable Hydrogen from Biogas

BayoTech’s hydrogen generators can use biomethane derived from biogas as a feedstock.

Realizing the Potential

Landfills, wastewater treatment plants, farms, dairies and other industrial and commercial plants all represent significant sources of biogas which can be used to produce biomethane for hydrogen production. According to a study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the U.S. total biomethane potential in raw biogas is estimated at about 16 million metric tons per year. This represents a potential 4.2 million metric tons of renewable hydrogen annually.

Creating Renewable Hydrogen from Biogas

Renewable natural gas, or biomethane, is biogas that has been refined to remove carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other trace gases through an upgrading process so that it meets natural gas industry standards. Once the biogas has been upgraded to biomethane it can be used as feedstock in a BayoTech on-site hydrogen generator to produce 99.999% purity renewable hydrogen.

Join the Hydrogen Revolution

Biogas reforming makes renewable hydrogen possible and convenient today. There are over 130 RNG production facilities in operation today in the US alone with another 100+ in the works. Similarly, there are 18 countries in Europe currently producing biogas and over 700 active production facilities across the continent.
